Music Playlists Statistics: Trends, Reach, and Artist Discovery

Key music playlist statistics covering listener habits, personalization, cultural moments, global reach, and artist discovery.

Music playlists have become a record of personal taste, a way to follow cultural moments, and a discovery channel for artists. Spotify reported more than 32 million user-generated “summer” playlists in 2023, while more than 193.7 million user-generated country playlists were created during the five years through 2024. The figures below show how playlist creation, personalization, editorial curation, and entertainment tie-ins influence listening.

How many playlists listeners create

User-generated playlists are closely connected to seasons, identities, genres, and events. Spotify counted more than 32 million user-generated playlists containing “summer” in 2023. Entertainment can create similarly specific bursts: more than 500,000 “Barbie” and “Barbiecore” playlists were created in 2023, and creation of those playlists spiked nearly 270% on May 26, 2023, after the film trailer was released. Spotify also reported that user-generated “Coastal Cowgirl” playlists increased nearly 2,000% over the three months before June 2023. (Spotify, “Turn It Up”)

Country music provides a longer-term measure of playlist creation. More than 193.7 million user-generated “country” playlists were created on Spotify over the five years through 2024. July was the platform’s No. 1 top-streamed country-music month across that period, and Spotify’s Hot Country playlist ranked among its global top 10 most-listened-to playlists across the same five years. Large events can bring new people into playlist creation. During the 2026 soccer tournament, fans created 219,000 tournament-themed Spotify playlists through July 14, 2026. More than 181,000 listeners made a soccer-themed playlist for the first time during that tournament. These are event-specific measurements, not estimates of all playlist activity. (Spotify, “How the World’s Biggest Soccer Tournament Soundtracked the Summer”)

Playlist behavior often follows the calendar, but listening can also be pulled forward by films, television, sport, and lifestyle trends. Tournament-themed playlists generated more than 172 million Spotify streams worldwide during the 2026 soccer tournament, compared with 46 million in 2022. The comparison covers the tournament figures reported by Spotify for those two editions. (Spotify, “How the World’s Biggest Soccer Tournament Soundtracked the Summer”)

Summer listening can revive older releases as well as new ones. Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” generated more than 96 million Spotify streams between April 1 and May 30, 2023. After the May 26, 2023 premiere of The Little Mermaid, global daily average streams of the film’s soundtracks rose nearly 230%. In another activity-based example, streams of “Pickleball” playlists increased more than 205% in May 2023 compared with May 2022. (Spotify, “Turn It Up”)

Television placement can produce unusually concentrated changes. The Last of Us Official Playlist generated more than 1.6 million global Spotify streams after its January 31, 2023 release, measured through March 15. Following its appearance in episode 1, global streams of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again” rose more than 520% in March 2023. After episode 3 aired on January 29, U.S. streams of Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time” increased 4,900% between 11 p.m. and midnight Eastern Time. (Spotify, “Songs Featured in ‘The Last of Us’ Have Enjoyed a Huge Upswing in Streams”)

The same source reported that global Spotify streams of Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys’ “Alone and Forsaken” grew more than 660% during The Last of Us season 1. Lotte Kestner’s “True Faith” received a 640% global stream increase in the 24 hours after episode 4 aired. These percentages describe the source’s reported changes around specific episode placements, rather than a general average for television music. (Spotify, “Songs Featured in ‘The Last of Us’”)

Personalized and algorithmic playlist reach

Personalized playlists operate at a different scale from individual user-created lists. Spotify reported more than 615 million users in June 2024, each with a tailored listening experience. By April 2026, listeners had streamed its personalized daylist playlist for more than 1.17 billion hours since the feature launched in 2023. Those totals describe platform-level reach and cumulative listening, not the number of unique daylist listeners. (Spotify, “Celebrate the Unique Ways You Listen With ‘My Spotify’”; Spotify, “What 20 Years of Spotify Data Reveals About Our Listeners”)

Release Radar illustrates how personalization can be linked to an artist’s release cycle. Spotify describes it as a one-week-cycle playlist containing new releases from artists a listener follows or listens to most. A release pitched through Spotify for Artists was eligible for Release Radar for up to 28 days after release, and an artist could have only one song in Release Radar at a time, according to Spotify’s February 2020 guidance. (Spotify for Artists, “Behind the Playlists”)

The same February 2020 source reported that Spotify had playlisted 72,000 artists through its playlist-pitching program between 2018 and February 2020. It also reported that 20% of tracks pitched through Spotify for Artists had been placed on at least one playlist by that point. Because these are historical program measurements, they should not be treated as current placement rates. (Spotify for Artists, “Behind the Playlists”)

Editorial playlists and artist discovery

Editorial playlists can function as a bridge between a new release and listeners who have not previously heard an artist. Spotify reported that nearly 70,000 artists had been added to its Fresh Finds playlists by May 2025. In 2024 alone, more than 18,000 artists from 127 countries were featured, and Fresh Finds drove more than 65 million artist discoveries. (Spotify, “Fresh Finds Turns 10”)

Fresh Finds data also describes what can happen after an initial placement. More than 90% of artists added in 2024 used Spotify for Artists’ playlist-pitching feature. On average, artists’ new listeners and international streams more than doubled one month after their first Fresh Finds placement. More than 50% of artists first added to Fresh Finds were later added to other Spotify editorial playlists. These are reported averages and shares for the stated Fresh Finds cohort, not guarantees for every artist. (Spotify, “Fresh Finds Turns 10”)

The Fresh Finds ecosystem included more than 12 genre-specific playlists in May 2025 and was curated by more than 30 Spotify editors. Nearly 70% of Fresh Finds streams represented first-time artist discoveries in 2024. Together, these figures distinguish discovery from repeat listening: the reported stream share refers to listeners encountering an artist for the first time. (Spotify, “Fresh Finds Turns 10”)

Countries, languages, and communities

Playlist reach is not limited by the artist’s home market or the listener’s language. Spotify’s GLOW program had added more than 10,200 LGBTQIA+ artists to GLOW playlists globally from its January 2023 launch through June 2024. GLOW artists received more than 140 million editorial streams in their first month after joining, while GLOW playlists accumulated more than 280 million streams and enabled more than 62 million discoveries through June 2024. The GLOW hub was available in more than 50 markets in June 2024. (Spotify, “Celebrate and Honor Pride”)

European music also shows the scale of cross-border discovery. European artists generated 28 billion global discoveries on Spotify in 2024, while European listeners streamed EU artists 351.66 billion times that year. More than 830 million user-generated playlists in the United States included EU artists in 2024, and more than 52,000 EU artists landed on Spotify editorial playlists, a 4% increase from 2023. (Spotify, “EU Artists Generated a Record-Breaking €1.7B in 2024”)

French-language music provides another measure of playlist globalization. By September 2024, 39 million Spotify users had added at least one French-language track to a personal playlist. French-language music streams had risen 94% since 2019. During the 12 months before September 2024, more than 83 million hours of French-language music were streamed across more than 180 countries, and non-French-speaking audiences averaged 50 minutes of French-language music listening per month. (Spotify, “Listeners Around the World Are Embracing French-Language Content”)

Playlist-driven surges for artists and soundtracks

Artist catalogs can accumulate playlist reach over time. By August 2024, BLACKPINK had more than 13 billion Spotify streams, and its tracks had been added to more than 71 million user-generated Spotify playlists. Its five most-streamed songs had collectively surpassed 4 billion streams, while the group’s Spotify streams grew by more than 110% year over year on average. (Spotify, “Celebrate 8 Years With BLACKPINK”)

Spotify’s RADAR program reported more cumulative discovery at the program level. RADAR artists generated more than 338 billion collective Spotify streams from the program’s 2020 launch through September 2025. They also sparked more than 6.5 billion listener discoveries, and their tracks were added to Spotify editorial playlists more than 1.5 million times worldwide during that period. (Spotify, “RADAR’s Global Impact”)

Show playlists can remain large listening destinations after a season or episode cycle. By April 2026, the Stranger Things Netflix show playlist had 765 million all-time Spotify streams, the Bridgerton show playlist had 749 million, and the CoComelon show playlist had 334 million. These are all-time totals through April 2026, so they are not comparable to one-day or one-month stream measurements without additional context.
